Bajan Pollster Peter Wickham weighs in on early election in Barbados which is scheduled for January 19th 2022.
According to Peter Wickham the snap election was an open secret within the Barbados Labour Party considering that the party has been declaring new candidates and replacing old ones.
Once an election campaign begins in the Caribbean, false truths, half-truths and other unwanted information surfaces- There seems to be rumors circulating surrounding an uneasiness within the Barbados Labour Party, will that affect the results going into the election.
Wickham says rumors don’t normally work in the Caribbean, however to destabilize the Government the opposition needs to go through a process. They have to go to parliament and must have a vote of no confidence in the Prime minister and then that Prime Minister has the opportunity to call an election themselves- just as Mia Mottely is doing.
Prime Minister Mottely, Wickham says is being strategic and is making calculated moves.
COVID 19 he says is a reality that every country must deal with and Barbados is no different, therefore the presence of the virus ought not to stop the election process.
Oppositions throughout the Caribbean he says normally look forward to an early election which assists them in bringing forward their cases early giving the people and opportunity to decide on who they want to lead.
Wickham says in most corners people are discussing the need for a strong opposition and that is where the DLP needs to put its effort.
