Guyana and Canada are exploring opportunities to strengthen economic relations and expand cooperation in several important areas, following discussions between Guyanese President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.

The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between Canada and the Caribbean Community.

Areas identified for greater collaboration included trade, security, climate change, biodiversity protection and development financing.

President Ali welcomed Canada’s interest in strengthening its partnerships with Commonwealth countries and highlighted the importance of translating international commitments into practical results.

Particular attention was given to biodiversity conservation and the need to secure financial and scientific resources for countries with significant natural assets.

Guyana has considerable natural resources and biodiversity, making international cooperation important as the country seeks to balance economic development with environmental protection.

The discussions are expected to contribute to wider efforts to strengthen relations between Canada, Guyana and the Caribbean region.
