Grenadians went to the polls on Thursday to elect a government, with Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell seeking another term in office.

The election is being closely watched across the Caribbean, particularly because of the competing political parties and the country’s ongoing economic and social challenges.

Mitchell, leader of the National Democratic Congress, is seeking to retain the government after his party secured nine of the 15 parliamentary seats in the 2022 general election.

He faces opposition from the New National Party, led by Emmalin Pierre, and the Democratic People’s Movement, led by former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David.

More than 97,000 people were registered to vote across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. A total of 46 candidates are contesting the 15 elected seats in the House of Representatives.

The campaign has focused on economic development, healthcare, employment opportunities and the cost of living.

Mitchell has promised to modernise the economy, strengthen healthcare services and reduce youth unemployment. His challengers have also outlined proposals aimed at creating jobs, improving medical services and strengthening local food production.

Grenada’s election is also significant because Mitchell has been among Caribbean leaders advocating for an apology and reparations from Britain for slavery.

The results will determine the country’s political direction for the coming years.
