Turks and Caicos opposition presents proposals to strengthen policing and community safety

The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) in the Turks and Caicos Islands has presented several proposals aimed at strengthening policing and improving public safety.

The proposals were raised during discussions between opposition representatives and senior officials of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force at a strategic management retreat.

The delegation included Opposition Leader Edwin Astwood, PDM leader Douglas Parnell, Member of Parliament Audric Skippings and Secretary General Mark Fulford.

Among the issues raised was the need for a local police training centre and a properly equipped firearms training facility.

The party argued that police officers must have access to appropriate equipment, training and resources to respond effectively to emerging security threats.

Traffic congestion in Providenciales was another major concern. Opposition representatives highlighted the difficulties emergency responders may face when trying to reach residents during urgent situations.

They also raised concerns about driving standards, the use of roundabouts and motorists’ responses to emergency vehicles.

The opposition further discussed changing crime patterns, including robberies affecting businesses, bars and members of the public.

The PDM welcomed the opportunity to contribute to discussions about the future direction of policing and said it would continue advocating for safer communities.
