Pelican Court Housing Development Officially Handed Over to Government

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has reached a significant milestone in its housing development programme following the official handover of the Pelican Court housing complex in the Point community. The development, which replaces the former Booby Alley housing area, consists of 150 modern condominium homes designed to provide improved living conditions for families who previously lived in the community.

The project was financed through an approximately EC$50 million grant from the Government of the People’s Republic of China. It represents a substantial investment in urban renewal and housing, particularly for residents who have experienced years of uncertainty while awaiting the completion of the development.

The construction process encountered several challenges, including disputes, legal difficulties and delays associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, the project was eventually completed, marking an important stage in the government’s efforts to improve housing conditions.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne indicated that former residents who owned and occupied homes in Booby Alley would receive priority consideration when the new units are allocated. He also stated that residents were expected to begin moving into the development by January, following the completion of outstanding preparations, including landscaping and utility installations.

The handover now shifts attention towards the allocation process, the management of the complex and the arrangements required to ensure that residents can occupy their homes. For the families affected by the redevelopment, the project represents the prospect of improved housing and a new chapter for the Point community.

The development also highlights the role of international cooperation in supporting national infrastructure and social development. However, the ultimate success of the initiative will depend on whether the new housing arrangements meet residents’ needs and provide lasting benefits to the community.
