Governor General Calls for Integrity as Twenty Members Take Oaths for Public Bodies

Governor General Sir Rodney Williams has called on newly appointed members of several public bodies to demonstrate integrity, impartiality and accountability as they assume responsibilities that affect the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Twenty members took their oaths during ceremonies at Government House on Wednesday. The appointments covered four institutions: the Midwives’ Board, the Antigua Public Utilities Authority Board, the Police Service Commission and the Central Board of Health.

The appointments are significant because these organisations have responsibilities extending across public health, essential services, policing and professional standards. Their decisions can influence the quality of services citizens receive and the level of confidence they place in public institutions.

During the ceremonies, Sir Rodney emphasised that public appointments must be accompanied by a strong commitment to serving the national interest. He particularly highlighted the importance of fairness and transparency within the Police Service Commission, which has responsibilities relating to police officers’ professional development, advancement and accountability.

The Governor General also drew attention to the importance of the Central Board of Health. Its responsibilities extend beyond healthcare facilities to include sanitation, waste management, food and water safety, disease prevention and the general cleanliness of communities.

His remarks reinforced the expectation that members of public bodies must exercise their authority responsibly and make decisions guided by the law rather than personal interests.

The effectiveness of these institutions will ultimately be judged by their performance and their ability to deliver on their responsibilities. As the newly sworn-in members begin their work, public attention will remain focused on whether their decisions contribute to stronger governance and improved services for the population.
