Valerie Edwards, General Secretary of the Layer Farmers’ Association, has refuted claims of an agreement with the government regarding an increase in egg prices, clarifying that discussions are still ongoing.
Despite this, the Cabinet has reported successfully preventing a price hike after negotiations. Farmers had requested a $2 increase in wholesale prices due to rising feed costs and heat conditions, but Cabinet members expressed skepticism about the necessity, citing stable conditions in neighboring islands.
To address these concerns, a study will be conducted to evaluate the actual costs of egg production, and plans are in place to establish a Poultry Board aimed at regulating prices.
The Cabinet also issued a warning against the potential formation of an “egg cartel,” which could exploit consumers in the market.
