St. Peter MP Asot Michael is reminding the Antigua Labour Party that only the constituents of Parham can remove him as their representative or prevent him from being the candidate contesting the next general elections on their behalf.
He has represented the constituency for four consecutive terms; and, speaking during the 2022 Budget Debate, Michael again signaled his intention to contest the pending polls. They are constitutionally due in March 2023 but are likely to be held this year.
Michael contends that the people of St. Peter are displeased with the manner in which the Labour Party is treating him and continue to support him as their representative.
The MP reminds the House of Representatives that the party’s own constitution stipulates that the constituency branch is responsible for the selection of a candidate for a general election.
If there is more than one candidate, constitutionally, there has to be a primary, Michael adds.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne already has indicated that businessman Rawdon Turner is the candidate of choice to represent St. Peter in the upcoming elections.
Michael has been at odds with the party leader for the past two years, and Browne has indicated that Michael will not run on a Labour ticket, given all the allegations that have been made against him.
