Prime Minister of Sudan- Abdalla Hamdok has announced his resignation after days of violent protests. His announcement came after three protesters were killed by Sudanese security forces during anti-coup demonstrations near the capital Sunday.
In a televised speech announcing, Hamdok said he is stepping down to make way “for the daughters or sons” of the country to complete the transitional period.
In his speech, he praised the people of Sudan for their determination in demanding “freedom and justice” during the protests, saying that “you will definitely have a better future with your revolutionary enthusiasm.”
Since 2019, Sudan has been ruled by an uneasy alliance between military forces and civilian groups, but the military took control in October, dissolving the power-sharing Sovereign Council and transitional government. They also detained the Prime Minister at the time.
The country’s military chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, reinstated Hamdok in November as part of a deal between the two groups. But Sudanese protesters continue to demand immediate democracy and have hosted several violent protests.
The demonstrations followed widespread internet and mobile phone network outages.
On Sunday, protests in Omdurman, were the 14th day of mass demonstrations against military rule since a coup on October 25. So far, at least 57 individuals have been killed by the security forces during the protests.
