Coconut Reforestation to Come

Citizens and farmers can soon expect the reforestation of new coconut trees after the country experienced major loss and damage to the crops over the past years.

Chief Plant Protection Officer, Dr Janil Gore-Francis has confirmed that the department has approved the importation of these seeds after a thorough risk assessment.

“The forestry unit within the ministry has been working on a reforestation project and they would have gone through and imported a quantity of those seeds,” she explained.

“As far as I am aware, they are growing the seedlings from them to be part of that reforestation programme, as to where exactly those plants will be planted, I am not sure but I know they have them in nurseries currently.”

She also stated that the impact of the disease on the remaining plants is not significant and reports about affected plants have lessened altogether.
