President of the Leeward Island Airline Pilot Association (LIAPA) Patterson Thompson does not believe claims by Prime Minister Gaston Browne that his Cabinet overruled a decision to support 50 per cent of the full staff liabilities of former LIAT workers.
Browne explained that he pitched for 50 per cent of the full staff liabilities but Cabinet decided against his recommendations and capped it at 50 per cent of the severance pay instead.
Thompson said these claims are very hard to believe, given the powers the prime minister has.
“In our spheres of politics the Prime Minister is gone and a lot of them in that cabinet will definitely owe their existence to him being in the position that they are in so I can’t believe that.”
Thompson added that [he] is a little surprised that Minister Weston will not support it because “he is the author of two letters stating it”.
“It is what it is and I am glad that they have at least admitted that we are trying to get them to commit to what they said they will commit, that is important. It is not an agreement, it is their concept, there is no agreement and as I said before it will be very hard to convince 600 plus employees to take it.”
