Information Minister Melford Nicholas has admitted that there is a challenge with the country’s border security and says that the government will be making moves to address that problem.
In May a vessel was stolen from Perry Bay in Antigua and was later discovered in St Kitts and Nevis.
There is also the question of how a vessel allegedly left Jolly Harbour on May 23, with Mehul Choksi who had been reported missing that day.
Nicholas in speaking to the press highlighted that the situation where someone would have left Antigua’s borders and would have arrived in another country under irregular circumstances has not only included the neighbouring island of St. Kitts but also recently Dominica.
The Minister further identified his new role in handling an increased Border Security response.
“ There is some issue in respect to the Marine Border Security, so the Cabinet has given consideration and has asked me as the Minister with responsibility for technology to look at what we can do to enhance the border security in terms of technology at our ports of entry. That will include Jolly Harbour, Port St.John’s, English Harbour and Barbuda.”
“We will therefore look into that and it is likely to be a costly endeavour.” Nicholas expressed.
