Thailand Introduces ETA Requirement for American Travelers, Including Dominica, Starting December 1, 2024

Starting December 1, 2024, travelers from the U.S., Dominica, and several other American countries will need an Electronic Travel Authorization to enter Thailand.

In a significant policy shift, Thailand will require travelers from several American countries, including the United States, Brazil, Canada, and Dominica, to secure an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) starting December 1, 2024. This change ends the previous visa-free access these travelers enjoyed and aims to enhance immigration controls and border security.

Thailand’s new ETA requirement marks the end of visa-free access for American and Dominican visitors, emphasizing enhanced border security.

The new requirement affects citizens from 14 countries, including Colombia, Cuba, and Jamaica. To enter Thailand, travelers must apply for their ETA online through the official e-Visa portal before their trip. The ETA permits a single entry for up to 60 days, with the option to extend for an additional 30 days.

This move comes as Thailand sees a growing number of visitors from the Americas, particularly from cities like New York, Toronto, and São Paulo. The introduction of the ETA is intended to streamline the immigration process while maintaining security.

With over 1 million American tourists visiting Thailand in recent years, the new requirement emphasizes the importance of compliance. Travelers who fail to secure their ETA or overstay their visa will face penalties.

Despite these changes, citizens from neighboring countries like Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia will still enjoy visa-free access. Thailand’s updated immigration policy reflects its commitment to balancing security with a welcoming environment for international visitors.
