New Barbuda Port Expected to Support Direct Cargo Shipments

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the proposed new port in Barbuda is intended to accommodate direct container shipments, reducing the need to unload cargo in Antigua before transporting it to the sister island.

Browne said the change could reduce handling and transportation costs, with potential benefits for construction and the price of goods.

He explained that the existing port’s vulnerability had been identified following Hurricane Irma in 2017, prompting the search for a more suitable location.

According to Browne, the selected site offers more favourable ground conditions and water depth, although some dredging will be required.

The Prime Minister also envisaged business opportunities around the facility, including supplying visiting yachts, organising excursions and providing services to vessel operators.
He said the development would include a public marina component.

Addressing the relationship between the new port and a nearby private development, Browne said developers were expected to advance up to US$5 million to assist with construction. He said that contribution would be credited towards lease payments for the old facility.

Browne urged Barbudans to prepare to benefit from the commercial activity he expects the new port to generate.
