Chinese Embassy Hosts Caribbean Youth Parliamentarians for Cultural Exchange in Antigua

Young parliamentary representatives from several Caribbean territories have participated in a cultural exchange reception hosted by China’s Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, Jiang Wei, as regional youth leaders gathered in St. John’s for a youth parliament meeting.

The reception, held on Tuesday evening, October 20, brought together representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The gathering provided an opportunity for the young representatives to interact with Chinese diplomatic officials and learn more about Chinese culture while strengthening connections among young people from different Caribbean communities.

The programme included several cultural activities, among them an opportunity for participants to colour Chinese characters on the China and Caribbean Friendship Wall displayed at the entrance to the reception hall.

Ambassador Jiang welcomed the young parliamentarians and expressed appreciation for their confidence, openness and enthusiasm.

She emphasised that meaningful relationships between people and countries require more than modern communication technology. In her remarks, she highlighted the importance of face-to-face conversations in building trust and preventing misunderstandings.

The ambassador encouraged the participants to learn about one another’s societies, recognise differences in development experiences and identify common interests that could support stronger relationships.

She also expressed hope that cultural exchanges would help deepen friendship between Caribbean and Chinese youth.

The event took place as the young representatives participated in regional parliamentary activities intended to expose them to debate, leadership and the responsibilities associated with public service.

Speaker of Antigua and Barbuda’s House of Representatives, Osbert Frederick, also attended the reception.

Frederick praised the young parliamentarians for their contributions to debates earlier in the day. He said their presentations had demonstrated the potential of the region’s emerging leaders and encouraged them to remain focused as they prepare for future responsibilities.

The Speaker’s remarks placed emphasis on the importance of nurturing young people who are interested in governance, public policy and representing their communities.

Developing leadership skills among young people is particularly important for Caribbean countries, where governments face challenges involving economic development, climate change, education, employment and regional cooperation.

Opportunities to participate in parliamentary debates can help young representatives understand how decisions are made and how competing views can be discussed through democratic processes.

The reception also provided an opportunity for representatives from different territories to interact outside the formal parliamentary setting.

Antigua and Barbuda Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle attended the gathering, along with Senators Maleika Parker and Jonathan Whenner.

The participation of regional youth representatives from five territories underscored the cross-border nature of the meeting and the importance of creating opportunities for young Caribbean leaders to engage with one another.

Although the reception focused on cultural exchange, its broader significance lies in encouraging dialogue between different societies and helping young people develop a wider understanding of international relationships.

As Caribbean territories continue to work together on shared regional priorities, initiatives involving youth leadership and cultural engagement can help establish relationships that extend beyond individual meetings.

The event highlighted the value of giving young people opportunities to participate in discussions about leadership, international cooperation and the future direction of their countries.
