What appeared to be a routine traffic stop turned into a violent ordeal on Friday afternoon when a contractor was ambushed by two gunmen posing as road workers.
The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Sir Andy Roberts Drive. The victim, who was driving alone, encountered traffic cones and two men in reflector vests signalling him to stop. Believing it to be legitimate, he slowed his vehicle before being forced out at gunpoint.
The assailants escaped with more than $19,000 in payroll cash, the contractor’s mobile phone, and his Jeep. Police later recovered the vehicle abandoned in Cades Bay, but the money and phone remain missing.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the armed robbery and are appealing for information from the public.
