Driver’s illegal turn results in injury, damage to officer’s cycle

A female driver in Antigua has been charged with making an illegal turn, which resulted in a police officer sustaining a broken arm and damage to the motorcycle he was riding.

The incident, which occurred on April 24, was presented yesterday before Acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason. He advised the officer to take the matter to civil court, as the investigating officer is reportedly off-island. Wason emphasized the necessity of the officer’s presence to provide details, such as measurements of the accident. However, he said that while he was making a pronouncement, which he clarified was not mandatory, but rather a suggestion for expedited justice, he stated that the maximum award he can recommend in this case is $25,000.

The defendant, who was driving on Friars Hill Road, claimed that she did not hear the officer’s siren nor did she see him approaching. Wason pointed out that it is crucial for drivers to exercise caution when making turns, even if another driver has signaled them to proceed. He advised both parties to exchange contact information immediately, as the defendant expressed a willingness to reach a settlement.

The case has been adjourned until October 20 to confirm the settlement and provide any further updates
