Zone III Schools Mathematics Quizz series returns

After the COVID-19 pandemic forced a hiatus, Zone III Schools reinstated its annual Math quizzes, rebranded the Harney Motors Ltd Zone III Math Quiz Series 2025.

Education Officer, Dr Desiree Antonio was quite pleased that the series was realized because of the importance of Mathematics. Education Officer with responsibility for Mathematics Shoya Hurst enthusiastically encouraged students to have fun with Math and to always celebrate their progress.  The company previously sponsored the Grade 2 Math quiz and have committed to funding the entire series which included Grades 2, 3 and 4 Encounters among eight schools.

The competition is designed to ignite greater passion for the subject in young learners while strengthening fundamental skills at the various grade levels, along with developing teamwork and collaboration. The confidence gained would assist in fostering more positive attitudes and outcomes. A unique feature of these math quizzes is the inclusion of all levels of students. Each school had 8 members – four on the main team and 4 sub team members.

The students were very excited to participate in their Grade level quizzes. They were required to respond to questions related to: number theory, computation, statistics, measurement, time, money and shapes.

Their teachers were instrumental in identifying the topics and submitted sample questions which were used to generate the wide array of questions which featured practical, real-life situations that brought the subject alive and fun for students. The experience also gave educators insights into the strengths and weaknesses of their students and how they can make imparting the knowledge more meaningful.

The competition occurred over three days. The winners for Grade 2 were Bendals Primary, JT Ambrose and Island Academy earning 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Grade 3 winners were Buckleys Primary, Island Academy,  and Sea View Farm gaining 1st, , 2nd and 3rd places. The Grade 4 students were led by Island Academy, JT Ambrose and Sea View Farm Primary in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

Special thanks to Ms Niffell Bique and Mr Roberts from Harney Motors Ltd for playing an integral role in capturing the moments. The Ministry of Education – Zone 3 schools look forward to the continued support of the sponsors next year in supporting the educational development of the nation’s youth.
