Games: FA’s women’s programme to launch this month

The Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) is set to launch it’s senior women’s competition this month followed by a women’s football festival.

This is according to the FA’s technical director and former national player, Sowerby Gomes, who said a tentative date of June 15 has been earmarked for the festival with the league set for kick-off right after the 2025 Carnival celebration in early August.

“The women’s programme is looking to start on the 15th of June, the teams are preparing and they should be having a meeting around the 8th [of June] to just wrap up the actual start of that female league. It’s [the organising] is being handled within the ABFA’s office and we have an organising committee that is handling the female programme and I am very much a part of the start of that along with madam president, Gwen Salmon and some other members,” he said.

Gomes went on to reveal that this year’s programme will be supported by corporate Antigua with close to 10 teams already in preparation mode.

“We are looking to make the launch of that because there is a sponsorship for our female programme so all of that will be unveiled shortly and so far, as I said, there is between seven to eight teams that are registered,” the TD said.

The 2024 edition of the women’s football league was captured by Earthquakes.
