US Virgin Islands Group proposes $5 million investment for Horse Racing revival

A group from St. Croix, USVI, has presented a US$5 million proposal to revive horse racing in Antigua and Barbuda by restoring the long-dormant Cassada Garden Racetrack.

Three officials from the Antigua Turf Club appeared before Cabinet on Wednesday to detail their efforts to raise capital for bringing the racing facility back into operation.

Horse racing activities in Antigua have been suspended for several years due to deterioration of the racing track, making the sport unattractive to patrons and participants.

According to the proposal, the USVI group plans to repair the track, buildings, and viewing stands at Cassada Gardens. The comprehensive proposal also includes refurbishing another building on Old Parham Road to house a slot machine casino.

Additionally, the group intends to construct an off-track betting facility at Cassada Gardens where wagers could be routinely placed.

Cabinet has reserved its decision until its next meeting, primarily to allow Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who serves as Minister of Finance, to participate in the decision-making process.
