The Prime Minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Justice will oversee the Prison Service.
The Gazette Notice outlining the responsibilities of each ministry makes no mention of the prisons falling under the ministries of Homeland Security and Defence.
But in the Schedule for the Ministry of Justice, Minister Devesh Maharaj has the responsibility for the prison system.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar confirmed that it is inclusive of matters relating to prison officers.
This is a return of the system under the People’s Partnership Administration, where its Ministry of Justice had similar responsibilities.
