A 29-year-old man was fined for possession of marijuana after pleading guilty to unlawfully having 25 grammes of the illegal substance in his possession.
The man, a resident of Michael’s Village, was left holding the proverbial bag since the weed was to be shared with his cousin. However, before it could be divided, he was caught by the police. He was also facing a charge of possession with intent to transfer, however he pleaded not guilty and the prosecution offered no evidence against him.
On Saturday, April 19 about 9:20pm officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) were responding to a report in Michael’s Village and while driving on a by-road they observed the man sitting in a grey Toyota Vitz.
The officers went to him, identified themselves and requested to conduct a search of his person and the vehicle.
The lawmen found a Ziploc plastic bag on the vehicle’s dashboard. The construction worker was questioned about it and he immediately replied, “A fuh me.”
The man was told that it is an offence to have more than 15 grammes of cannabis in one’s possession at any one time. He was taken to St John’s Police Station where he was arrested and charged.
The accused was convicted and fined $400 payable in seven days, or he will serve 90 days in prison. The street value of the drugs is $250.
Acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason made an order for the drugs to be confiscated and destroyed.
