Cabinet has approved $800,000 USD for equipment needs at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre following a report from Acting Director Dr. Shivon Belle Jarvis.
Dr. Jarvis noted that Antigua and Barbuda’s neonatal mortality rate of 5.4 deaths per thousand live births is relatively lower than several Caribbean islands and has surpassed the 2030 SDG goal of no more than 12 per thousand.
The centre will provide increased scholarships for nursing students at UWI Five Islands and incentives for fifth form students to pursue nursing careers.
Immediate purchases will include a second CT scan machine.
