Empire Nation builds momentum with mix of youth and experience

Empire Nation, last season’s runners-up in the ABCA Two Day Tournament, are showing strong form as they maintain their second-place position in the current season. The team has secured their second win of the season with a massive win over Bolans last weekend, demonstrating the effectiveness of their balanced squad composition.

The return of Damian Lowenfield, who had been regularly absent from cricket for the past two years due to work commitments in Barbuda, has strengthened Empire’s batting lineup. Partnering with the experienced National player Tyrone Williams Jr. at the top of the order, the duo’s opening partnership has already shown promise, though coach Tittle emphasizes the need for converting fifties into bigger scores, targeting 150-plus innings.

The team has been strengthened by several new additions this season, including batsman Nich George and promising left-arm fast bowler Michael Harrilall. Adding to their depth is Yannique Watley who in his debut season has shown potential that coach Tittle believes can be further developed.

A significant asset to the team’s development is the presence of veteran Justin Athanaze, who serves as both captain and mentor. Athanaze, known for his local and regional cricket achievements, brings valuable experience as the team’s most senior player, providing crucial guidance to the younger squad members.

The team’s current success has been complemented by Micah McKenzie‘s bowling performances, with the player having recently participated in a pre-season spinners camp. However, the team is currently without regular captain Kenrick Scott, who is taking a brief mental health break but is expected to return soon.

As the ABCA Two Day Tournament progresses, Empire Nation appears well-positioned to challenge for the title that eluded them last season when they fell to champions Liberta Blackhawks in the final. Their blend of experienced veterans and emerging talent, coupled with strong leadership both on and off the field, suggests they remain strong contenders in the competition especially with the recent change to the structure of the competition.
