Court orders release of man convicted in 2018 transgender partner’s killing

The Court of Appeal has ordered the immediate release of Timothy Jackman, the man convicted of killing his transgender partner in 2018.

Jackman, 27, had been serving time for the manslaughter of 25-year-old transgender Angel Joseph, who died from a neck wound during a dispute at their Potters home.

The case took a turn when authorities discovered a mathematical error in his sentencing.

Although convicted in 2020 and sentenced to what the judge described as “11 years and nine months”, the numerical value actually given—112 months—translates to just nine years and three months.

Prison officials released Jackman on July 3, 2024, even requesting that his brother bring civilian clothes for his departure. But days later, claiming an “error”, authorities reversed course and sought his return to custody, stating he had been released two years prematurely.

Following his re-arrest in August, Wendel Alexander, one of Jackman’s attorneys challenged the legality of his client’s return to prison.

Yesterday, the Court of Appeal ruled definitively that Jackman had, in fact, completed his sentence in full.

Attorney Wayne Benjamin Marsh told Observer that “counsel would take such actions to reward or cause him to be rewarded for the time he spent beyond what he should have spent in prison”, noting that he had already had a job lined up for his original release date.
