Flyers Dominate Stingerz as ABBA Season Tips Off; Steelers Edge Spanish Heat in Thriller

Defending Division 1 champions, Flyers Basketball, got off to a strong start in the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) competition, making light work of Northside Stingerz to win 88-64 on Sunday’s opening night at the JSC basketball complex.

Playing in the second game of a double-header, Flyers dominated three of four quarters, outscoring Stingerz 23-13 in the first quarter, winning the second quarter 20-18 and taking the third quarter 29-14. Stingerz rebounded to claim the fourth and final quarter 19-16 but it was much too late for the buzzing bees.

Adonis Humphreys led the charge for Flyers with 22 points while grabbing 18 rebounds. He was assisted by T-Shawn Lewis who hit 15 points off the bench. There were contributions from Selassie Brathwaite and Xavier Meade with 12 and 10 points respectively.

For Stingerz, Jevonte Valerie top-scored with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Donte Trimingham contributed with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Michael Jeffers picked up 15 points all in the losing cause.

In Sunday’s opening clash, Potters Steelers enjoyed a narrow 81-79 win over Spanish Heat, also at JSC.

Steelers jumped out in front after the first quarter, outscoring the opponents 26-15. Spanish Heat rebounded to claim the second quarter 23-11 before Steelers stole the third quarter 26-23. The teams were evenly matched in the fourth quarter with 18 points each.

Kareem Edwards led the scoring for the victors with 17 points while picking up nine rebounds. He was ably assisted by Darnell Azille who had 14 points and 17 rebounds. Veteran Marlon “Buju” Charles contributed to the win with 11 points and nine rebounds.

In a losing effort, Steven Matthew sank 22 points for Spanish Heat while Kelvyn Pimentaladded 12 points off the bench.
