Urgent Alert: Hurricane Helene Set to Impact Upper Gulf Coast

AccuWeather Global Weather Center – Sept. 24, 2024 –AccuWeather meteorologists are warning residents along Florida’s upper Gulf Coast to prepare for severe conditions as Tropical Storm Helene approaches, expected to make landfall as a powerful hurricane within 48 hours. With life-threatening storm surge, destructive winds, flooding, and potential tornadoes in the forecast, officials urge evacuation from coastal areas.

AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter noted that exceptionally warm water temperatures—4 to 6 degrees above average—are fueling Helene’s rapid intensification. The storm is forecasted to traverse regions with record-high water temperatures, increasing the risk of significant impacts at landfall.

While storm surge is a major concern, DaSilva pointed out that the timing of tides could mitigate some effects, as landfall is expected during low tide. However, the storm’s speed will allow stronger winds to penetrate further inland. Meteorologists will continue to monitor Helene’s approach closely as it evolves.
