MP Richard Lewis Calls for Stronger Parental Role to Address Youth Violence

With youth violence on the rise in Antigua and Barbuda, MP Richard Lewis is urging parents to become more involved in their children’s lives. He believes that a strong family foundation is key to guiding children and preventing them from falling into negative behaviors.

Lewis emphasized that the family is where social values begin and warned that family breakdowns create serious issues. He praised parents who successfully teach discipline and values, and urged others to take their responsibilities seriously.

He also expressed concern about children left unsupervised before and after school, especially in single-parent households, noting that many families lack the extended support systems that used to help raise children.

Lewis called on all parents, particularly fathers, to be more engaged to help steer their children away from gangs and violence. His concerns echo those of other officials, including Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who stress the importance of active parenting.

As the community grapples with these issues, the focus remains on strengthening family bonds and supporting parents to provide a secure future for the youth.
