Gaston Browne Urges Action Against Climate Injustice at Global Summit

Towards Climate Justice: A Call for Bold Action from Wealthy Nations

At the conclusion of the Summit of the Future, Heads of State and Governments emphasized the urgent need to reform global governance for a more inclusive multilateral system that benefits all nations. They warned that inaction could lead to a “dark future,” highlighting the importance of Security Council reform, youth engagement, and bold climate action.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne stressed that those least responsible for the climate crisis are suffering the most. He called out “big oil,” stating their exploitation of the Global South’s resources is nearing its end.

Browne urged wealthy nations to compensate for the loss and damage caused to vulnerable communities and to invest in a sustainable future. He advocated for new international agreements to curb fossil fuel use and for innovative financial solutions to address inequalities. He reminded leaders of the need to adopt the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS, urging a focus on equity and climate justice for all.
