Egg Prices Rise Due to Heat Stress and Increased Costs, Says Farmers Association

The Layer Farmers Association reports that heat stress and rising operational costs have led to a hike in egg prices. Stress impacts birds’ laying patterns, reducing egg output significantly. Farmers often collect only half of their usual daily egg production, and it takes time for birds to return to normal laying rates.

Additionally, a recent 2% increase in Antigua and Barbuda’s sales tax has further strained farmers, affecting them by 8%. The association suggests tax and duty relief on food production, including utilities and coop maintenance, as a way to help control egg prices.

The association is ready to work with the government to find solutions that balance consumer costs with sustainable farming.
