Benin, West Africa- Market Created for Plantain Flour as Wheat Flour Prices Rise

One Beninese entrepreneur is grateful for her recent market expansion due to the rise in price of wheat flour and import issues due to the ongoing war.

The woman, who started her business in 2018, has had to double her production since the price of wheat has risen significantly. She says she now produces 150 kg of plantain flour per month.

Wheat flour is generally a healthier alternative which is known to help with weight loss, diabetes and high blood pressure. It is gluten free and has antioxidants which work to boost the immune system. Some nutrients include:

Magnesium
Iron
Potassium
Vitamin A
Vitamin C
Vitamin K
Vitamin B6

According to reports, West Africa is facing the worst food crisis in its history. Coupled with climate change, and war within the country, the war in Ukraine has caused food prices to skyrocket. More specifically, food supplies which are mainly imported from Russia are unable to reach the country due to shipping problems due to the war.
