At least six people were arrested in Martinique after law enforcement officials discovered on board two sailboats containing over one tonne of cocaine.
According to a report from Martinique 1 Ere, Customs Officers found the drugs on the vessel in the town of Le Marin on Tuesday just as the suspects were transferring them to another boat.
The publication also reported that law enforcement officers arrested six individuals who are nationals of Bulgaria, Latvia, Estonia, and . Officials referred to the incident as a “very nice catch” without giving any further details on the seizures.
They suspects are currently in custody at the Ducos prison while the authorities have seized the drugs and the two vessels involved in the illegal trade.
The Caribbean region is a hub for cocaine trafficking. The drug most often transits through the islands to then reach several European countries.
