Health care workers in Guyana have been warned that they will face the full brunt of the law if they participate in the distribution of false COVID-19 vaccination cards.
The warning came from Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony who said these medics are enabling a “dangerous” practice.
“When we catch you, you are going to face the full brunt of the law,” Anthony said.
“This is a very dangerous thing. If you are facilitating somebody to get the card but they didn’t get the vaccine. Then when they get sick, we probably think they have been immunized and we are getting a breakthrough infection. We have to put an end to this practice he warned.
He added that any doctor or nurse caught facilitating this fraud will be expelled from the medical service and face time in jail.
Currently, about 15 cases of vaccine card fraud are before the courts.
The minister said he was happy to note that only a small fraction of the medical fraternity is engaged in this illegal behaviour.
Anthony disclosed a new type of COVID-19 vaccination card will be distributed soon.
