CARICOM to assists the people of Haiti

Prime Minister Gaston Browne in his capacity as Chairman of CARICOM will be writing to the United States Government on behalf of the people of Haiti and the manner in which they are being treated by the US.

Over 10 thousand Haitian migrants made their way to the US border with Mexico last week seeking asylum, many stating that they would rather die than return to the impoverished Caribbean country, which is in a state of crisis.

Thousands were deported back to Haiti, some were allowed to go to other states within the US and are expected to appear in court within 3 months while some were seen being whipped by border patrol officers on horseback.

The Chairman of CARICOM said, “We are writing to the relevant authorities to express our concern about the treatment of the Haitian migrants who are seeking asylum. We are asking for some compassion and respect for international standards with migrants and we are calling on the US administration to guarantee their rights to due process.”

“In my understanding, there was a standard that was established back in 2021 in which temporary protective status was granted to individuals who had to face these dire economic and security issues in Haiti.”

Some of the migrants told US media that the situation in Haiti is dire and worsening following the assassination of President Jovenell Moise, the devastation from the 7.2 earthquake on August 14 and then hurricane grace on August 16.
