Second Dose of COVID-19 Vaccine rolls out in St. John’s city

Phase three of the Covid-19 vaccination program has commenced with the rollout of second doses.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Rhonda Sealy-Thomas, along with Principal Nursing Officer, Sister Margaret Smith, Medical Director of the Mount St. John’s Medical Center (MSJMC) Dr Albert Duncan, and healthcare workers at the MSJMC received their shots on May 12.

The first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine was administered on February 19, the start of the vaccination programme.

The Cabinet has also received their second dose on May 13 while retired parliamentarians will receive theirs on May 15.

The country needs to inoculate at least 70 per cent of its population to reach herd immunity, and so far just over 31,000 residents have received the first of the two-dose Astrazeneca vaccine.

Health officials are cautioning the public that it is important to obtain the second dose to increase the efficacy of the vaccine and boost protection against COVID-19.

The first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will still be administered at all vaccination centres.
