The Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) is frowning on politicians who go into private business while in public office.
Harold Lovell’s remarks are targeted specifically at the head of Government, Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who has gone into the farming sector.
While he supports entrepreneurship, Lovell says that politicians should wait until they demit office to enter private ventures.
Lovell views such dabbling in private-sector ventures as a conflict of interest. He notes that a politician will have an unfair advantage, especially if he or she is competing in a sector like agriculture, as the prime minister is doing.
Lovell reminds the electorate that politicians are elected to help people – and not to take advantage of their positions and, in turn, help themselves.
