Government of St Kitts and Nevis to initiate recycling project of plastic

Department of Environment with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, is leading a recycling project of plastic, aimed to reduce waste and strengthen sustainability and to encourage a healthy environment.

This recycling project would start in collaboration with the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Solid Waste Management Corporation and it will investigate and inspect recycling systems in St. Kitts and Nevis, will make strategies, promote and encourage separation of waste and set up displays.

On April 21, during her appearance on Working for You, Permanent Secretary at Government of St. Kitts-Nevis, in the Ministry of Environment – Sharon Rattan stated that “There are some plans for the project that possibly in the next two to three months we will undertake to introduce recycling.”

Following the statement, she further declared that “I am also aware that Solid Waste would be doing something similar, so we have been in touch with our partners because we do not want to duplicate it and We want to accompany each other and that coincides with our plans for the gradual ban because even so we may ban, but what will we do with the plastic?”

Kenney Manning – Sustainable Destination Council in the Ministry of Tourism, briefly expressed on Admiral’s Enterprise Ltd., stating that company has set in motion some level of recycling.

Mr Manning further pointed out, “Admiral’s Enterprise Ltd, more or less, collect bottles and plastic materials and then put them in a container and ship them overseas. I am aware that there is also an initiative being done in Nevis by some students and teachers who collect plastics and send them down to Admiral’s. It is a slow process, but hopefully, in time we will get a more methodical system.”

Realizing the significance of Recycling, the officials further declared that “Recycling is extremely important because waste has a huge negative impact on our environment and Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste, as well as offers an important environmental benefit by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases such as- carbon dioxide(CO2) methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons – all of these contribute to environmental degradation.
