The Barbuda Council will be looking to tkae legal action to halt the construction of two luxury homes on the fringes of the world famous Frigate Bird Sanctuary.
Secretary of the Barbuda Council Paul Nedd confirmed the news in a media appearanc e this week.
“Our only way forward is legal recourse. It is obvious that the matter has reached the stage that did not include or involve the Barbuda Council and the Barbuda people so as a legally bound nation or legally bound country and people we feel that it is only neccessary that we seek a legal recourse where we will do whatever is neccessary legally to ensure that the project is is deemed unfit for that area,” Nedd revealed.
The proposed development at Cedar Point in the north-west of the island spans almost 114 acres, 98 of them comprising of a ‘security buffer’ which would place the site off limits to Barbudans.
John Paul DeJoria is said to be the applicant. He is a billionaire entrepreneur and one of the developers behind the controversial Peace, Love and Happiness (PLH) project.Â
The plans were outlined in a Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) carried out last month and released online by the Department of the Environment (DOE).
The first home dubbed the Abercorn residence would be 1500 square feet while the second home named Dejoira residence would be 1600 square feet.
If given the green light the properties would be built in three to four years.Â
Nedd did indicate tht if the proper channels are covered by the applicant then the Council would be open for discussing moving the project to a new location which does not hamper in any way the environment.
