Poor drainage is undermining roads while bridges also need urgent attention, cautions retired engineer Wehner

The extent of flooding due to torrential rains on Monday was made worse by poor drainage, says United Progressive Party (UPP) Mobilization Officer George Wehner.

The Woods area was a major trouble spot, with several vehicles stalling in the high water there.  In circulation now are photos that show a huge chunk of the road missing – and a dog house in the middle of the road – in the vicinity of the medical clinic.

Wehner – who is a retired member of the US Army Corps (core) of Engineers – says extensive work needs to be carried out on some of these drains and bridges.

The UPP Mobilization Officer says the junction of Friars Hill Road, Cross Street and Dickenson Bay Street should have been properly dealt with during the ongoing road-construction project, since that juncture is a water course for areas as far east as Factory Road.

He says the majority of bridges in St. John’s do not have the capacity to withstand the volume of water that is expected during this type of weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Wehner adds, many of the bridges are not equipped to carry the weight of certain vehicles, and this should be immediately addressed.

He says the Gaston Browne Administration should stop playing games and harping on the Opposition; rather, it should do what it said it could do and was elected to do.
