Orthopedic doctor encourages young persons with possible condition to register for scoliosis screening

This weekend, the Mount St. John Medical Centre (MSJMC) will open a Scoliosis Clinic to serve persons who believe they may have a deformity of the spine.

Dr. Mekul Singhal, an Orthopedic Surgeon attached to the hospital, says persons 21 years and under are eligible to be pre-registered for the screening this Saturday, September 26.

If the condition is left untreated, the doctor says, it will significantly impact an individual’s normal way of life.

Therefore, he recommends that persons who fall in the eligible age group, and who think they may have a deformity of the spine, should take advantage of the free screening.

Dr. Singhal says that various tests, including X-rays, will be conducted.  Once it is determined that there is some deformity, the clinic will proceed to further checks and treatment.

However, if surgery is required, affected persons will need to travel, since MSJMC is unable to perform the corrective procedures.

Dr. Singhal says that due to current COVID-19 restrictions, forms are being made available at the hospital’s front desk to facilitate pre-registration.

Persons will be given an appointment, or have the option of choosing a more convenient time to see the doctors.  And those who are diagnosed as having a deformity will be given a date to return to the hospital for consultations with foreign physicians.

Dr. Singhal says that a referral is not required and that the Clinic will be open from 8 a.m. to midday.
