Uncommon Uses for Vicks VapoRub

It’s probably the most popular remedy for the cold and flu in the Caribbean. Growing up, I remember my mother and grandmother rubbing me down from head to toe if I had gotten wet in the rain, or if I randomly woke up with a fever.

Now, besides respiratory illnesses, there are many other uses for Vicks VapoRub, and believe it or not, people are still inventing uses as the years go by. From muscle pain relief to fungal infections, this article explores the most uncommon uses for Vicks VapoRub.

But before we look at the uses, let’s explore what this miracle rub is made of:

Active ingredients:

• camphor (4.7 percent)
• menthol (2.6 percent)
• eucalyptus oil (1.2 percent)

Inactive ingredients:

• Cedarleaf oil
• nutmeg oil
• Lemon fragrance
• petrolatum
• thymol
• turpentine oil

Heal Your Feet: Vicks can be used to alleviate certain foot conditions, including athlete’s foot. The standout antimicrobial ingredients of the rub including camphor and menthol plus the inclusion of petroleum jelly, help to lock in moisture while killing off bacteria.

Help Acne:If you have eczema or acne, Vicks VapoRub is great for soothing your skin, reducing inflammation, and clearing up your complexion. This is due to ingredients like camphor and eucalyptus, which are known anti-inflammatories and antibacterial agents. Just a tiny dab on a pimple or patch of Acne can help reduce inflammation.

Reduce Stretch Marks/Scars: The anti-inflammatory properties of the Vicks have been known to reduce scarring (including stretch marks) and minor bruises.

Help Heal Scrapes and Burns: The petroleum in the product may help minor cuts and scrapes to heal faster when applied once or twice daily as the thick formula creates a barrier between your cuts. The menthol and eucalyptus also act as anti-inflammatory properties and help promote and stimulate healing. Be sure not to apply on open wounds.

Alleviate Headaches:  The menthol in Vicks helps to relieve cranial pain when it is inhaled or rubbed directly on the forehead.

Relieve Itchy Skin:  Vicks can also relieve minor skin irritations such as those associated with, eczema, hives or insect sensitivities. The menthol is anti-bacterial so it can work to soothe itchiness.

Repel Insects:  Vicks has been proven to repel insects including mosquitoes, and while it isn’t as effective as normal insect repellents it may provide some relief if you are being bothered by pesky insects.

These are just some of the uses of Vicks VapoRub, but as we said earlier, there are new uses being discovered every year. In this season of coughs and colds, be sure to keep a bottle of Vicks nearby. It is safe for adults and children over the age of 5.
