Workers at the Caribbean Union Bank CUB could continue their protest action today after talks broke down two weeks ago.
On Wednesday, the staff took action over salary issues and what the Antigua and Barbuda Free Trade Union is calling other matters.
They refused to work, forcing the Bank to suspend teller services at its Friars Hill Branch temporarily.
President of the Union spoke to the media outside the CUB on Wednesday morning
James told reporters that the bank continues to speak about being financially solid but their wages don’t reflect that.
“Maybe the bank is not taking us seriously and so we thought that it was necessary for us to come together as a group of employees and to show and discuss our frustration and rejection of management position,” James said.
“Also we know that in this time everybody is using COVID as a reason not to increase salary, but while everyone is using COVID as an excuse there are certain top officials in this country that are making proclamations that the Caribbean Union Bank is doing so well.”
“We cannot have an institution where workers are investing their time, resources, energy, expertise but yet we are seeing those organizations investing significant funds in other extra work activities, sponsorship of all sorts of things but then we are finding excuses not to treat fairly with the people that are making the organization. We are tired of that,” the President of the Antigua and Barbuda Free Trade Union Samuel James added.
