Saint Kitts and Nevis is advancing preparations to become a homeport for major cruise operations, following discussions between Carnival Corporation executives and members of the Federal Cabinet.
The meeting, held on Monday, November 2, focused on preparations for homeporting operations expected to begin in November 2027.
The delegation was led by Marie McKenzie, Senior Vice President for Government and Destination Affairs at Carnival Corporation. The executives met with Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, Tourism Minister Marsha T. Henderson and other government officials.
During the visit, the delegation also toured the proposed location for a new cruise terminal, accompanied by representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority.
The proposed development forms part of wider efforts to prepare the Federation for the arrival of cruise passengers who will begin and end their voyages in Basseterre.
P&O Cruises, a Carnival Corporation brand, is expected to use St. Kitts as a homeport beginning in November 2027. Its ships Iona and Arvia are among those identified for the planned operations.
The initiative could create opportunities for local businesses across several sectors, including accommodation, transportation, restaurants, retail and tourism services.
Unlike traditional cruise calls, homeporting arrangements can encourage passengers to spend additional time in the destination before and after their voyages.
Officials are continuing discussions with stakeholders to ensure local businesses and service providers are prepared to benefit from the anticipated operations.
The development represents another step in St. Kitts and Nevis’ efforts to strengthen its tourism industry and expand its presence in the international cruise market.
