PROTESTS ERUPT IN GUYANA AS SUPPORTERS OF OPPOSITION LEADER CLASH WITH POLICE

Tensions have escalated in Guyana following protests by supporters of opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed, who are demanding his release from custody.

Demonstrations reportedly took place outside a Georgetown court as supporters expressed frustration over Mohamed’s continued detention, despite a magistrate’s decision upholding bail in a separate extradition matter.

Mohamed, leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, remains in custody over separate allegations involving the unauthorised disclosure of government surveillance footage.

According to reports, he was arrested on October 28 following allegations that he paid a police constable GYD $800,000 for surveillance footage. He was subsequently remanded until November 24.

The opposition leader has also faced allegations connected to a separate firearm investigation. Mohamed and his attorney have disputed aspects of that matter, alleging that the firearm was planted.

Meanwhile, his sister, Hana Mohamed, has called on supporters to demonstrate peacefully and has raised concerns about his treatment while in prison. The Guyana Prison Service has rejected the allegations concerning his treatment.

Mohamed has not been convicted of the offences mentioned in the reports.

The unfolding situation has attracted attention to questions surrounding the legal proceedings, public demonstrations and the treatment of individuals in custody.

Further developments are expected as the legal matters continue.
