A proposal has been made to introduce a national diabetic eye screening programme in Barbados as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare services and improve the early detection of eye complications associated with diabetes.
The proposal was presented by prominent Chinese ophthalmologist Professor Wei He, founder of the He Vision Group.
Professor He is currently working to roll out a similar initiative in Grenada and has expressed interest in bringing the programme to Barbados.
His team is also expected to move on to Antigua and Barbuda to conduct eye screenings among residents.
Speaking during this week’s Ideas Forum at Christ Church Foundation School, Professor He highlighted the importance of establishing a comprehensive national eye health programme.
Diabetes can lead to serious eye complications, including diabetic retinopathy, which can threaten a person’s vision if not detected and treated early.
The proposed initiative could therefore provide an opportunity to strengthen preventive healthcare and increase access to screening services across the region.
