Trial in Fatal Friars Hill Road Collision Postponed Until December 8

The trial of Karim Edwards, who is accused of causing a fatal traffic collision on Friars Hill Road, has been postponed until December 8, 2026.

The case concerns a collision on October 23, 2022, that claimed the life of medical student Kenneth Mathew and left another victim, Priyanjana Das, with permanent, life-altering injuries.

Edwards faces charges of causing death by reckless driving and reckless driving in connection with the collision. He pleaded not guilty to both charges in February.

The trial had been expected to begin earlier but was delayed because another matter was still being heard before the court. The new date was subsequently confirmed during court proceedings.

Mathew suffered severe brain injuries and died more than a week after the crash. Das survived but sustained devastating injuries, including the loss of her right arm, along with multiple fractures to her left arm and pelvis.

The latest postponement means the criminal proceedings will continue more than four years after the collision occurred.

For families affected by serious road accidents, court proceedings can be an important part of the pursuit of justice. However, repeated delays can prolong uncertainty for victims’ relatives and survivors.

Edwards is represented by attorney Wendel Alexander. The trial is scheduled to begin on December 8.

As the matter remains before the court, the allegations must be distinguished from a finding of guilt. The trial will provide an opportunity for the prosecution and defence to present their respective cases.
