Injury blows force Reggae Boyz shuffle as McCalla, Anderson step in for Gold Cup push

Reggae Boyz head coach Steve McClaren finds himself navigating an early tournament headache, as injuries to key players Mason Holgate and Isaac Hayden have forced squad adjustments during Jamaica’s Concacaf Gold Cup campaign.

With both players ruled out due to injury and illness, respectively, McClaren confirmed on Monday that Sue-Lae McCalla and Karoy Anderson have been drafted in as replacements as Jamaica seeks to regain momentum following a disappointing 1-0 loss to Guatemala in their opening Group C contest.

The timing is less than ideal for the tactician, who is guiding the Boyz through his first Concacaf tournament, a region he admits continues to surprise and challenge him at every turn. In fact, McClaren addressed not just the personnel changes but also the cultural and tactical learning curve he has faced since taking charge.

“From the first day I arrived, this has certainly been an education for me in terms of the culture within Jamaica, the different types of surfaces in the Caribbean, and the atmospheres we’ve faced. It’s all been a challenge, but I’ve loved every game that has been a great challenge, and we knew this one against Guatemala would be exactly like it was,” McClaren said.

He referenced previous away matches against Honduras and Nicaragua, noting the “hostile atmospheres” and how adapting to such environments is key for success in this unpredictable confederation.

“I think it’s great, and I think we were talking about it earlier. There’s never an easy game in Concacaf. The Central American teams are really aggressive and have very good technique. The Caribbean teams are very strong, powerful, and a little like ourselves. The football is totally different, and we have to adapt to that,” McClaren shared.

That said, McClaren provided clarity on the absence of Holgate and Hayden from the squad sheet in the last outing. Both, he confirmed, are now back home recovering, with their replacements expected to slot into training and match preparations swiftly.

“Unfortunately, Isaac came down with stomach cramps and respiratory problems before the BVI game. We pushed him to play against Guatemala, but afterward he complained again. After further investigation, we had to send him home and replaced him with Karoy Anderson, who should be arriving today (Monday),” McClaren explained.

“He [Mason Holgate] picked up a knee injury in the Guatemala (World Cup qualifying) game. The scan showed a medial ligament issue, not a major one, but one that would rule him out for two to three weeks. So, we sent him home and brought in Sue-Lae McCalla,” he added.

Despite the setback, McClaren remains optimistic about his team’s prospects, though they face a must-win situation in their next two fixtures against Guadeloupe on Friday and Panama later.

“Concacaf football is narrowing. Everybody now is coached very well; even the smaller teams defensively are hard to break down and are well organized. So I think the football is narrowing from top to bottom. So we will see in this competition again, there are no easy games. But we have to make sure that we react on Friday, and that reaction is we have to win,” he ended.
