A legal professional with extensive international experience has been appointed to the magistracy.
Magistrate Andrew Mighty, a Jamaican-Canadian jurist with qualifications spanning multiple jurisdictions, assumed the new role on March 1, 2025.
According to government sources who announced his appointment last week, he is “highly regarded by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission and others.”
Mighty succeeds Magistrate Conliffe Clarke, who died on February 7, 2025, approximately one year after completing cancer treatment.
“I believe that every single man, woman and child is made in the image of God and is therefore entitled to have their inalienable human dignity respected by all others,” Mighty stated, outlining the philosophical foundation of his judicial approach.
Magistrate Mighty’s legal career includes many achievements, beginning with a University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Scholarship in 2002. He graduated with honours from UWI Cave Hill in 2005 before continuing his education at Norman Manley Law School, where he demonstrated exceptional skill in trial advocacy.
His professional experience encompasses roles as both prosecutor and defence counsel. “I have amassed significant experience on both sides of the aisle – as senior Crown prosecutor and senior defence lawyer involved in litigating the full gamut of criminal charges from murder to petty theft to domestic assault as well as quasi-criminal charges,” Mighty noted.
His credentials include admission to the bar in multiple jurisdictions: Jamaica (2007), Ontario, (2012), the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (British Virgin Islands, 2016), Saskatchewan (2016), and New Brunswick (2023).
The father of three is married to Petrina, a Vincentian-Canadian.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, he describes himself as “an avid sportsman” who has participated in football, cricket and track throughout his academic years.
