The Upper House has approved the Vehicle and Road Traffic Amendment Bill of 2025, sending it to the Governor General for assent. The legislation, which includes an increase in annual motor vehicle license fees, sparked protests from the opposition United Progressive Party.
In response to public concerns, the Prime Minister adjusted the proposed 40 percent hike, already approved by the Lower House. During Senate deliberations, Leader of Government Business Senator Shenella Govia defended the increase, emphasizing its role in funding urgent road repairs. She argued that the hike amounts to just 28 cents per day for most vehicle owners.
Opposition Senator David Massiah questioned the Transport Board’s accountability for previously collected funds, a concern echoed by opposition members. Government senators countered claims of over-taxation, with Senator Dwayne George describing the administration as responsible and compassionate.
Despite the heated debate, the Senate passed the bill, clearing the way for its implementation.
