Antigua Calls for Greater Investment in Renewable Energy Across Small Island States

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda — Antigua and Barbuda is using its position as host of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to encourage greater international investment in renewable energy and climate resilience across small island developing states.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has argued that Caribbean countries possess considerable renewable energy potential but require stronger financial arrangements and regional cooperation to turn those resources into practical energy projects.

In a commentary published by Reuters, Browne highlighted the Caribbean’s potential for solar, wind and geothermal energy, noting that the region has sufficient natural resources to contribute meaningfully to international renewable energy targets.

Antigua and Barbuda is working towards generating 50 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

One developing solar energy project is being structured to allow ordinary Antiguans and Barbudans to hold a direct financial stake, giving citizens an opportunity to participate in the economic benefits of the energy transition.

Browne also stressed that reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels could protect Caribbean economies from international fuel-price fluctuations and disruptions caused by geopolitical conflicts.

He called for greater access to climate financing, stronger regional regulatory arrangements and investment mechanisms that would make smaller renewable energy projects more attractive to international investors.

The issue is particularly relevant as small island states prepare for further international climate discussions at COP31.
